Possible tornado sighting near Burlington cuts swim meet short
Northwest Kansas Swim League competitors had the chance to complete most of the June 8 swim meet in Burlington, but several relays were left unfinished because of storms, including a possible tornado spotted nearby.
Based on the completed events, however, Holyoke Swim Club took second place overall. Goodland, Kansas, won the meet with 345 points, followed by Holyoke 323; Burlington 249; Wray 172; Colby, Kansas, 157; Oakley, Kansas, 63; and Oberlin, Kansas, 61.
Holyoke’s Keegan Shaw also broke two records in the 15-18 boys division. In the 200-yard freestyle, his 2:02.87 time bested the previous record by 4 seconds. The 100-yard backstroke record he broke with a 1:03.91 remained unbeaten for 25 years.
Also of note was Summer Martin’s performance in the 13-14 girls 200-yard freestyle. Though she finished second, her time was faster than previous pool record.
