Regan Van Overbeke adds 2nd state-qualifying freestyle event
Nearing the end of their season, Holyoke High School girls swim team saw yet another state-qualifying event at the Jan. 18 triangular in Eaton. Regan Van Overbeke finished second in the 200-yard freestyle. Her 2:15.78 time was just under the 2:16 3A state requirement. Earlier in the season, she qualified in the 500-yard freestyle, and Thursday’s qualifier was the team’s ninth this season.
HHS coach Aly Brinkema noted that several of her swimmers posted lifetime best times Jan. 18. The team had several stand-out individual performances against two strong teams. Both Windsor and Eaton are great competitors, with many members swimming year-round, Brinkema added.
In addition to qualifying in the 200-yard freestyle, Van Overbeke also claimed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:06.57. Rylee Schneller bagged a couple of second-place finishes. In the 200-yard individual medley, she clocked 2:29.01, and in the 100-yard breaststroke, 1:15.24.
Haley Van Overbeke earned a second herself in the 100-yard freestyle, 1:02.85. She also finished sixth in the 50-yard freestyle, 0:28.94. Lali Marquez took fourth in the 100-yard butterfly, 1:11.36. She also earned sixth in the 100-yard backstroke, 1:17.45.
Anna Jelden had two seventh-place finishes: a 1:08.80 in the 100-yard freestyle and a 1:29.18 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Also adding seventh-place finishes to the HHS tally were Traeli Hutches, 200-yard freestyle, 2:24.60; Demiah Hernandez, 200-yard IM, 2:59.30; Brenna Gatton, 500-yard freestyle, 7:30.10; and Amy Mackay, 100-yard backstroke, 1:19.29.
