Regular season to wrap up Friday

Only one game remains on the schedule for the Holyoke girls basketball team, a Friday contest against Akron on the Dragons’ home court.

After last week featured games against Class 2A No. 1 Merino and No. 2 Wiggins, Akron enters the week ranked No. 4. The Rams are 10-7 on the season.

Holyoke headed west to Merino last Thursday.

Head Coach Arlan Scholl said his team just didn’t play well against the Rams.

“We played hard, but we just could not put a defensive and offensive game together on that night,” he said.

After Elise Krogmeier scored off the opening tip, the Dragons got a 3-pointer from Audrey Talavera and offensive rebound putback by Anessa Colglazier. Holyoke only trailed 7-9 with 4:30 remaining in the first quarter, but went scoreless over the remainder of the period. The Rams scored 20 straight points, leaving Holyoke trailing 7-29.

The Dragons’ only points of the second quarter were a 3-pointer by Courtlyn Kinnie and a bucket in low block by Krogmeier.

Holyoke found some success in the paint in the third quarter. Talavera scored off a drive along the baseline, Krogmeier added two baskets and Colglazier put back another offensive rebound. Kinnie rounded out the Dragons’ third-quarter scoring with a 3-pointer and made the first Holyoke points of the fourth quarter with her third 3-pointer of the game. Nicole Schlachter also scored in the fourth quarter.

Kinnie led Holyoke with nine points, while Krogmeier scored eight points.

Colglazier had six rebounds, including four at the offensive end, and Talavera had seven assists in the 65-28 loss.

After a month of road games, Holyoke returned home to host Wiggins Friday.

Grace Roberts and Krogmeier gained the Dragons an early 7-2 lead. After 10 straight points by Wiggins, Colglazier and Kinnie scored back-to-back buckets to give Holyoke an 11-10. Talavera sunk two free throws to increase the lead to three, but Wiggins responded with eight points in a row to leave the Dragons trailing 13-18.

Scholl said the Dragons came out strong to start the night, but then came on one of those times when Holyoke just struggled to score as a team.

Krogmeier scored Holyoke’s first four points of the second quarter to keep the Dragons within three points, 17-20. After a run by Wiggins, a 3-pointer by Talavera and bucket by Colglazier kept Holyoke within six points, 22-28, before Wiggins scored the half’s final four points.

The Tigers pulled away for good in the second half. Talavera and Krogmeier scored before a 3-pointer by Kinnie. One free throw by Talavera rounded out the third quarter.
