Rule Yourself Apparel promotes physical, mental health

Kaison Kinnie, who will be a senior at Holyoke JR/SR High School in the fall, was recently awarded the Phillips County Economic Impact and Opportunity Scholarship.

The scholarship is meant to recognize young people between the ages of 12-21 who have contributed to, have the desire to, or have fostered the overall economic growth, economic innovation, community development or entrepreneurial spirit of Phillips County.

Kinnie has certainly done that with the establishment of his clothing business, Rule Yourself Apparel, which is aimed at encouraging people to stay strong — both physically and mentally. He sells shirts of all kinds, hats, shorts and stickers.

He officially established it in January, but it was something he’d been thinking about since last October.

When the pandemic restrictions began closing things down, Kinnie said he really began to open his eyes to the importance of mental and physical health.

He knew people who had died by suicide, which really brought the importance of mental health into focus. He also works out regularly at Holyoke Fitness Club, and he understands that physical and mental health are tied together.

“I wanted to make a change,” Kinnie said, adding that he wants the positive messages on his clothing to remind people to make positive choices and understand that they’re capable of achieving their goals and doing anything, especially in harsh times.

Kinnie said Rule Yourself is meant to show people that they have control and autonomy over themselves. Other sayings that remind people of this are on the Rule Yourself social media pages at Facebook and Instagram.
