Second-quarter surge gives Yuma boys the win

A huge second quarter for Yuma was truly where the Feb. 20 varsity boys basketball game was won. The visiting Holyoke Dragons held their own in each of the other three quarters, but the deficit in the second proved impossible to come back from. Yuma won the final regular-season game 49-31, and now the District 2 teams are in the thick of the district tournament, which will conclude Saturday, Feb. 29.

Last Thursday’s game in Yuma got off to a somewhat slow start. After one quarter of play, Yuma had a narrow 6-5 lead. Things took off from there, though. Holyoke put 10 points on the board, but Yuma made more than double that for a 27-15 lead at halftime.

Back for the third quarter, Yuma extended its lead, scoring 12 more points and holding the Dragons, once again, to five. Trailing 39-20 going into it, Holyoke had a respectable fourth quarter. The Dragons scored 11 points and held their opponents to 10. Yuma did, of course, have enough of a lead to win the game 49-31.
