Shaw to compete in 4A state swim

    Clocking a personal season best in the 100-yard backstroke in the May 10-11 conference swim meet, Holyoke senior Keegan Shaw (swimming with the Valley boys team) qualified for state.
    In prelims at Mountain View High School in Loveland, Shaw bettered his season times in both the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. He also swam on the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams.
    After prelims, Shaw was tied for 16th place in the backstroke event. This necessitated a swim-off to determine who would go to the finals, explained Holyoke coach Aly Brinkema.
    With very little rest, Shaw raced for the fifth time Friday afternoon, knowing that the winner of the race would earn the final spot in the consolation finals the next day.
    Not only did he win the swim-off, but he dropped an additional 1.8 seconds, clocking a 1:01.95 to secure a spot in the 4A state championships May 17-18 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Thornton. Prelims start Friday at 10 a.m., with finals at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
