Shutout game keeps HHS streak alive

With league action officially underway, Holyoke High School has the only undefeated team remaining in North Central football. On Oct. 4, Holyoke beat Yuma 34-0. Limon beat Wiggins 48-7, and Wray beat Burlington 14-0.

That’s a 5-0 season record for Holyoke, Wray and Limon are both 4-1, Yuma is 3-2, and Burlington and Wiggins are 2-3. Among 1A schools across the state, HHS is still ranked third by CHSAANow.com. Last year’s state runner-up Strasburg is currently first, and 2018 state champion Limon is ranked second.

Last Friday’s home game against Yuma appeared to be an easy win for the Dragons, but they certainly didn’t seem content to rest on their laurels. Holyoke coaches and athletes alike know that they have some tough competition ahead of them, and their effort Oct. 4 reflected that knowledge.

The Dragons took the lead early with a 54-yard touchdown run by Blake Mosenteen. Alexis Vega had a successful PAT kick, and HHS was ahead 7-0 just two minutes into the game. Mosenteen also scored the team’s second TD, this time from 3 yards out. Another good extra point by Vega put the score at 14-0 with 3:16 left on the clock.

In the second quarter, Yuma struggled to make progress of its own but did manage to hold the Dragons off for quite a while. With about three minutes remaining in the half, quarterback Miles Sprague made an impressive tight-window throw to Seth Watson for a 46-yard touchdown. Vega’s PAT kick was good, putting the score at 21-0.

Thanks to a big pass breakup by Mosenteen in the end zone with 0:22 on the clock, followed by an interception by Watson, HHS carried that lead into halftime.
