Softball goes 2-2 at Brush tournament

Lady Dragon softball picked up two wins and two losses at the nonplacing tournament in Brush on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 10-11.

They lost to Brush 16-3 and beat Florence 12-1 on Friday; and lost to Fort Lupton 11-1 and defeated Wray 10-3 on Saturday.

“Overall, we performed well,” coach Sherman Kage said. “We just struggled offensively.”

Kage said the girls worked on hitting in the downtime between games and made other offensive adjustments that paid off in the game against Wray.

Kage added that he felt the girls played well defensively, but there were too many errors with two outs and too many two-out runs allowed, which is something the team will be working on in practice this week.

He said he felt Holyoke pitched well, and the team is back to more of its normal rotation with the return of Aliyah Engle.

Holyoke scored two more in their half of the fourth, but four more Brush runs in the fifth clinched the 16-3 Beetdigger win.

Aliyah Engle pitched all five innings for Holyoke. She faced 38 batters, striking out four and walking two. She allowed 16 earned runs on 18 hits. She also led in stolen bases with one.

Correy Koellner hit all three RBIs for Holyoke. She had a home run and a double.
