Swimmers defeat Valley, Estes Park

Holyoke High School girls swim team defeated Valley and Estes Park 105-104 and 105-63, respectively, in a double dual at Valley last Thursday, Jan. 17, placing first in seven out of 12 events and earning another state qualifying time.
Coach Aly Brinkema said the meet, which was the team’s last regular dual-style meet of the season, saw Holyoke maintain its high standard of performance, despite injuries and equipment malfunctions.
“When every point counts, the team could have used those obstacles as an excuse to let up, but these 10 young ladies fought to the wall for every finish and came out with two wins,” she said.
All three teams swam together in individual events and relays during Thursday’s meet, but scoring was handled on a dual basis, with Holyoke vs. Valley, Holyoke vs. Estes Park and Valley vs. Estes Park.
Haley Van Overbeke earned a state qualifying time in the 100-yard freestyle in Thursday’s meet, clocking a 1:01.44 to take first place over swimmers from both Valley and Estes Park.
