Swimmers secure win in double dual

In a double dual with Valley and Liberty Common at Valley High School in Gilcrest, Tuesday, Jan. 14, the Lady Dragon swimmers secured a win over Valley while losing to Liberty Common, a new team that was introduced into the Tri Valley League this year.

Coach Aly Brinkema noted that it was a hard-fought win and true team effort with several teammates not able to compete due to sickness and injury.

“We had to scratch several events just minutes before the start of the race, and that had a negative effect on team points. That made the overall win all the more rewarding,” Brinkema said.

While the meet was scored as a dual with Valley and a dual with Liberty Common, all three teams swam together for the placings.

The Dragons took first in the 200-yard medley relay with Haley Van Overbeke, Traeli Hutches, Lali Marquez and Summer Martin.

The only other first-place finish was marked by Hutches in an exciting race of the 500-yard freestyle, with teammate Martin finishing third.

Van Overbeke, Marquez and Jackie Valenzuela provided much-needed second-place finishes in their individual events.
