Thanks to Berg, Holyoke HS has a boys golf coach

After exploring all possible options for a coach for the boys golf program, HHS athletic director Sandra Rahe was almost ready to suspend the program this year when Dale Berg stepped in to offer his expertise. A high school golf coach in Estes Park for over a decade, Berg moved to Holyoke earlier this year to assist in his family’s business.
Six team members kick off the HHS boys golf season, led by four returning letterwinners. They are senior Trey Bennett, junior Eli Meakins from Haxtun, sophomores Mason King and Brycce Wilber from Julesburg. Also joining the team are sophomores Deacon Dittmer and Xander Speicher.
Season practice began Monday, Aug. 7, with the first meet Thursday, Aug. 10. The team placed third with a 306 in its first outing of the season at the Brush Bunker Hill Varsity Invite. King led the Dragon team with a 98, Bennett shot a 102, Meakins 106 and Speicher 111.
Coach Berg said, “I can see these boys doing pretty well. They are all athletes. They know what they need to work on. They are dedicated and respectful.” He noted that with some instruction and working on their short game, chipping and putting, the team should do well this year.
Following the Aug. 10 opener, the rest of the season schedule includes:
Tuesday, Aug. 15, JV and V at Burlington; Thursday, Aug. 17, V at Eaton; Monday, Aug. 21, JV and V at Yuma; Saturday, Aug.26, JV and V at Cheyenne Wells; Tuesday, Aug. 29, V at Fort Morgan; Thursday, Aug. 31, V at Estes Park; Thursday, Sept. 7, JV and V at Holyoke; Friday, Sept. 8, JV and V at Sterling; Monday, Sept. 18, regionals at Estes Park; Thursday, Sept. 21, league tournament at Brush; Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 2-3, state at Indian Peaks in Lafayette.
The coach noted that there are three other JV tournaments scheduled, however, they most likely will not attend due to the smaller number of team members this year.
