Torres wins shot put at opening track meet
At her first high school track and field meet, freshman Emali Torres recorded a first-place shot put throw at 32 feet, 9.5 inches.
Yuma hosted the Early Qualifier Saturday, March 24. “It was a good start to the year,” said coach Corey Koberstein, noting he saw a lot of good performances from the Dragon tracksters.
He sees it as a starting point for the season. “We still have a lot to learn to get better,” he said.
Despite the name of the meet, Saturday’s results didn’t necessarily qualify any of the tracksters for the state meet. At the end of the season, 2A athletes from across Colorado who have times/distances in the top 18 will move on to state. They have all season to better their times and stay competitive for one of the 18 spots.
At Saturday’s meet, freshman Taylor Trumper placed second in the 400 meter run with Holyoke teammates taking three more of the top eight spots. Trumper also earned third in the 200 meter dash.
Junior Jillian Hunter took third in the 3200 meter run.
Top-three finishes were also recorded by Holyoke’s 4x100 meter relay and 4x100 meter throwers’ relay.
Boys in the top three were freshman Aaron Sierra, who got second in the 110 meter hurdles and third in the 300 meter hurdles, and freshman Alec Sprague, who got third in the 200 meter dash.
