Track teams battle the heat

In a normal year, high school sports would be over by this time of the summer. Thanks to COVID-19, schedules were rearranged, and Colorado state track and field won’t see its conclusion until the fourth weekend in June.

What does that mean for local athletes? A quick lesson in how to manage the heat.

Holyoke coach Corey Koberstein said the Platte Valley Invite last Friday, June 4, in Kersey was a hot one.

He said meet organizers ran the day very efficiently, which meant the tracksters didn’t have much time to recover in between events. The Dragons focused on staying hydrated and staying out of the sun.

Both teams had a good day of competition and both placed third out of 13 teams. The girls accumulated 82 points, and the boys earned 65.

Two Dragons earned first-place finishes. Ethan Johnson won the boys long jump, and Correy Koellner found herself on the top of the girls leaderboard in three events — long jump, shot put and discus.
