Sophomore Trumper in 4 individual events to lead young Dragon team

Three field events, three sprint races and two relays will see HHS participants at the Colorado 2A State Track & Field Championships at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood Thursday-Saturday, May 17-19.
Fueled by an extremely successful meet in Burlington Friday, May 11, the Dragon team is at peak performance, and coach Corey Koberstein is pleased.
While extremely young, the Dragon team is also experienced at state.
Making a return trip to the year-end championships are sophomores Taeryn Trumper, Luis Chafino and Josie Herman; and juniors Jacky Mosqueda and Emma Roll (relay alternate last year).
Freshmen who have earned their way this year are Emali Torres, Taylor Trumper and Ashley Rahe, as well as relay alternates Yeidi Juarez and Kylie Purkeypile.
Taeryn Trumper not only competed as a freshman last year but placed in four events: winning second in the long jump and fifths in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash, and running on the sixth-place 4x400 relay team.
She will be competing in four individual events this year: long jump, 100, 200 and 400.
Qualifiers had to rank in the top 18 in the entire state in 2A track events, and competitors have been watching those rankings all season. Designated qualifying distances are also set for field events.
Taeryn has led the pack in the long jump all season but widened that gap this past weekend to mark an 18-foot-2-inch jump, a good 15.5 inches further than the No. 2 ranked jumper.
She enters the state track meet with the third-best time (:26.54) in the 200-meter dash, fourth rank in the 100-meter dash (:12.52) and fifth in the 400-meter dash (:59.61).
