Trejo is 120-lb. champ at Stratton Invite

Jesus Trejo went 5-0, including four wins by pins to take the 120-lb. championship at the Stratton Invite Saturday, Jan. 28.
Coach Dusty McConnell said he is pleased with Trejo’s progress during the season.
Luis Chafino also wrestled in the championship in his 132-lb. weight division, finishing as runner-up in the tourney. He had some regional foe match-ups and wrestled well, said McConnell.
Rounding out the medal winners for Holyoke were third-place finishers Jessy Mosqueda at 106 lbs., Antoni Martinez at 195 and Andrew Rivera at 220.
Martinez was 4-1 in his bracket and finished in a three-way tie for first. Places were determined by fastest fall times and most points in matches, which dropped him to third for the tourney. But McConnell was well-pleased with Martinez’s matches.
Mosqueda and Rivera were both in three-person brackets, but met some regional foes to gain experience and confidence even in matches that they lost.
Holyoke had a great day as a team, finishing second out of 13 competing teams.
Lamar JV won the tourney with 123 points, followed by Holyoke with 82, Limon 79.5, Colby, Kansas, JV 68, Yuma 62, Merino 57, Byers 56, Stratton 50.5, Cheyenne Wells 32, Burlington JV 24, Las Animas 24, Simla 7 and Goodland, Kansas, 1.
“I am really proud of the kids,” said McConnell. From the first of the season, the coach has continued to emphasize to his young team that it’s all about how they’re going to finish. “And here we are at the end,” he added.
The Dragons will host Wray Thursday, Feb. 2, with parents’ night introductions at 6:15 p.m. followed by wrestling at 6:30 p.m. That will be the last mat time for season records until the regional tourney at NJC in Sterling Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11.
