Updated NWKSL rule means new feats for Holyoke swimmers

Swimming in a season that now allows a maximum of six events per person, compared to five events in the past, 14-year-old Rylee Schneller had a personal first: bringing home six first-place medals from a meet.

Swimming for Holyoke Swim Club at the June 10 meet in Burlington, Schneller won the 100 yard freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke, as well as the 200 yard individual medley. In the breaststroke she came within hundredths of a second of beating the meet record, 1:17.08, which she set herself last year. Rounding out her haul, Schneller also competed on the first-place teams in the 200 yard girls freestyle and girls medley relays.

Also benefitting this season from swimming an additional race was Emily Krogmeier, who secured six victories in the 15-18-year-old division at the Holyoke swim meet June 3. Points-wise, only the four individual races count for swimmers’ season totals. In Burlington, Lali Marquez also won each of her four individual events and added 28 points to her tally. Her victories were in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle, the 100 yard backstroke and the 100 yard butterfly.

Hefty scores from several individuals led to another second-place finish for the Holyoke team. Goodland, Kansas, won the meet with a score of 471. Holyoke scored 378, followed by Burlington 326, Wray 171, Colby, Kansas, 169, Oakley, Kansas, 81, and Oberlin, Kansas, 70.

Holyoke Swim Club will be back to competition Saturday, June 17, at the Oakley meet.
