Wray win slips through Holyoke’s fingers

State powerhouses Wray, Yuma are only losses of regular season

The Dragon gym was electric Friday evening, Feb. 16, as the Lady Dragon varsity basketball team looked for one last win in regular season action.
Wray had beat them earlier in the season, but after having a double digit lead in the second half, it looked like Holyoke had a good chance of beating the team ranked No. 2 in the state.
“We came out ready to go,” said coach John Baumgartner. “We played really hard.”
The Lady Dragons outscored the Eagles in the first three quarters, leading 11-10 at the end of the first, 23-21 at halftime and 35-29 going into the last quarter.
That’s where Holyoke met trouble. The girls had a hard time connecting with the basket in the fourth quarter, making only two 2-pointers compared to Wray’s 13 points.
Wray was up by three, 42-39, with only seconds left in the game. Holyoke had chances to get the ball back after failed free-throw attempts by the Eagles, but the rebounds proved elusive for the Dragons.
The crowd held its collective breath as Holyoke had one last opportunity to tie the game and take it to overtime. Both Sarah Razo and Grace Dille attempted 3-pointers, but at the buzzer, HHS was left with the 39-42 loss.
