Wrestlers gain awareness of the competition they face

Wrestling in quad competition with Peyton, Sedgwick County/Fleming and Highland at Fleming on Saturday, Jan. 30, Dragon team members got a good taste of what the competition looks like for the season.

Coach Dusty McConnell said the Peyton dual was especially tough, and the Dragons gained good experience in knowing what to look forward to if they qualify for state.

Additionally, the Highland matches were tough as well. In particular, McConnell said the Husky 138-pounder was runner-up in the state tournament last year and a strong competitor.

Holyoke wrestled well in the Sedgwick County/Fleming matches and will look to gain from their Saturday experience.

McConnell said they were a little out of shape but they now know what they need to do for next week.

Holyoke matched up with Peyton in four weight classes, with the Dragons all falling in first-round pins.

Against Sedgwick County/Fleming, five matches were wrestled with SC/F claiming all the wins.

Holyoke won by forfeit in the heavyweight division, while SC/F gained six wins by forfeit in weight classes that Holyoke was open.

Against Highland, Holyoke lost the four matches that were wrestled. The Dragons earned two wins by forfeit, and Highland claimed one win by forfeit.
