Wrestlers head into final week before regionals
One tournament and two duals made for a full week of action for the HHS wrestling team. With a slower schedule this week, the Dragons will be gearing up for the Feb. 9-10 regional tournament.
Luis Chafino earned runner-up honors at 145 lbs. at the Stratton Invitational Saturday, Jan. 27.
It was the last tourney of the year prior to regionals for the Dragons, and coach Dusty McConnell said they wrestled well.
While HHS finished strong, McConnell said he was hoping they could have been stronger as a team. Injuries and health hurt the team outcome, but McConnell said they’ll look to get healthy and ready for the upcoming regionals.
Only six Dragons competed at Stratton Saturday. While Chafino was the only placer, every HHS wrestler earned at least one victory on the mats in the tournament.
Lamar JV won the tourney with 195 points, followed by Yuma 138, County Line 128, Colby, Kansas, JV 117.5, Holly 60, Wray 50.5, Calhan 45, Cheyenne Wells 38, Holyoke 38, Limon 35, Stratton 28, Byers 25, Baca County 24, Simla 17, Kiowa 15, Tribune-Greeley County 10 and Las Animas 9.
