Wrestlers open season at big Limon tournament

In a 27-team tournament, the Dragon wrestling squad opened its season Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Limon Badger Invitational.
The season opener was postponed a week when the Dec. 1 St. Francis, Kansas, Invite was canceled due to bad weather. Originally scheduled to go to Kimball, Nebraska, on Dec. 8, the Dragons again had to reroute when the Kimball tourney was canceled earlier in the week due to anticipated low participation.
Seven Dragons competed Saturday. Luis Chafino was the only medal winner, placing third at 160 lbs. With 13 wrestlers in his bracket, he drew a first-round bye, then fell in his first match in the quarterfinals. He came through the back door for four straight wins to claim the third-place medal.
Also seeing wins on the Limon mats were Jesus Trejo at 145 lbs., Michael Ramos 170, Jessy Mosqueda 106 and Remington Hielscher 132.
Coach Dusty McConnell said the big tournament in Limon was a good pick-up for the team’s schedule as it gave the wrestlers a chance to see what they need to do to progress through the season.
He noted that several wrestlers are right on the line for weight participation, and a couple are now looking to drop a weight after the holidays.
With the season just opening, the wrestlers are looking to find their groove again, added McConnell.
County Line won Saturday’s tourney with 111.5 points, followed by Burlington 101.5, Yuma 98.5, Rye 94.5, Crowley County 91, Swink 85.5, Trinidad 82.5, Akron 80, Sedgwick County-Fleming 79.5 and Wiggins 68 to round out the top 10. Holyoke finished 15th with 40 points.
