A corn-shelling scene at the Kropps’ farm is pictured. John Fredrick William Kropp and his family moved to Amherst in 1907. His son Fred was elected Phillips County sheriff in 1954. Once, while attempting to question three young runaways, they ambushed him with nine stolen pistols and rifles. He was shot several times, but the stolen ammunition was only birdshot, leaving him with painful wounds. The subsequent manhunt, after which the offenders eventually surrendered to law enforcement, was one of the largest in northeast Colorado at the time and was joined by officers from surrounding towns and Nebraska. — Source: Phillips County Museum
