Officer-involved shooting leaves suspect dead

This postcard, sent to Miss Mamie Banner in Shenandoah, Iowa, Aug. 31, 1912, features a picture of the George W. Garland house at 206 S. Baxter Ave. The inscription reads, “Dear Mamie: I expect you will think it funny sending a card and letter by the same mail but you wanted one of the pictures and I could not put it in the letter. Geo.” Mamie met George F. Garland on a trip to Holyoke to visit her Borland relatives. They were married Sept. 5, 1916, after a five-year courtship. The newlyweds lived with the senior Garlands while their new home was being built on “Capitol Hill” in Holyoke. — source: Phillips County Museum
