The James W. Young Reservoir was one source of getting ice for summer use of the town in the early days of Holyoke. Ice from the reservoir was cut in the winter and packed in sawdust to store for summer use in keeping perishable foods cool. Young also hosted skating parties in the winter. The bell house in the back left of the photo rang at 9:00 each night when there were to be no youngsters out unless they were 18 years old. — Source: Phillips County Museum
