The 2010 election will take place in November, but the process of selecting who will represent each party on the ballot has already begun.
If you would like to become informed and participate in this process, I would like to call a few important dates to your attention.
The last day to register to vote and establish residency within a precinct to participate in precinct caucuses is Feb. 16. You must be affiliated with one of the parties to participate in a precinct caucus.
The precinct caucuses will be held on Tuesday, March 16 this year. There are eight precincts in Phillips County. Both Democrats and Republicans will have a meeting in each precinct where delegates will be selected. These delegates will move forward to the county assembly and from there some will move on to district and state assemblies. At the assemblies the delegates will be the ones who vote to choose which candidate(s) will appear on the primary ballot.
Additionally the Phillips County Republicans annual Lincoln Day Dinner will be held in Holyoke this year at the end of this month (details can be found elsewhere in this paper). This is likely the only time that a full line-up of candidates interested in being selected to represent the Republican party locally and statewide will be all together in Phillips County. Please consider having dinner and spending a few hours taking advantage of this opportunity.
Do you want to have a say in which candidates appear on the ballot? If so, I urge you to mark your calendars, set aside a few hours to participate, become informed and exert your rights and responsibilities as a citizen.
