Phillips County Fair Queen Sarah Heermann crowns Janna Smith
as the 2010 Lady-in-Waiting at Friday’s Dandelion Daze event in Holyoke.
Phillips County Fair Queen Sarah Heermann crowned her Lady-in-Waiting Janna Smith at Holyoke’s Dandelion Daze barbecue Friday, June 18.
Heermann, who will be a senior at Holyoke High School this fall, was named Phillips County Fair Queen last year and will continue her reign until the 2010 Corn Festival in Haxtun, when the Lady-in-Waiting will step into the role. Heermann is the daughter of Eldon and Christine Heermann.
Smith was crowned the 2010 Lady-in-Waiting after giving her candidate speech Friday night at the Phillips County Courthouse lawn. She will be a senior at Haxtun High School this fall and is the daughter of John and Denise Smith.
The queen candidate was judged on her speaking and public presentation abilities as well as the application process. Judges look for a fair queen who can represent the county in an outgoing, pleasant way and who will be honest and sincere in her commitment to the community.
Fair royalty proudly displayed their crowns, sashes, chaps and belt buckles. Long-time fair queen supporter Ardie Besse has been donating a belt buckle to the county queen for 25 years. A belt buckle was also handed down to the Lady-in-Waiting.
Heermann and Smith now have the responsibility of promoting and helping out with the upcoming Phillips County Fair, July 27-Aug. 1.
Usually a Phillips County princess is crowned, but there were no candidates this year.
