Event Center to be ready for county fair PDF Print E-mail

 County construction projects, equipment purchases and new employees highlighted business for Phillips County Commissioners last month as reported at their Wednesday, June 30 meeting.

 Paving work at Phillips County Event Center should be completed in time for the county fair July 27-Aug. 1. Paving the parking area directly in front of the Event Center will begin the week of July 12.

 Workers have also been busy with laying concrete and construction of the new Dragon’s Wagon Preschool playground and fence. Other finishing touches like display cases for 4-H, fences and gates will get the facility all ready for Fair.

 Community members can check out the Event Center at the Wednesday, July 21 Holyoke Chamber of Commerce spotlight lunch.

 Commissioners noted there is also remodeling taking place at the Resource Center at 127 E. Denver St. More space will be made available for Phillips County Dept. of Social Services.

 Plans for the removal of the garage door that faces Denver Street will make room for new office space for another entity.

 New purchases by the county this month included a $4,900 used Komatsu forklift for the Event Center purchased from Clark Auto and Truck Sales in Burlington. A used 2007 Ford F150 pickup was bought for county maintenance personnel through government auction for $10,000.

 New county employees hired for part-time summer help were Albert Rogers in the maintenance department and Shelby Beavers in the Assessor’s Office.

 Christie Winckler was recently reappointed to the Northeast Colorado Regional EMS/Trauma Advisory Council (RETAC). The board coordinates emergency health for nine counties in the region.

 Kindra Plumb has been hired as the Youth and 4-H Program Associate for the Colorado State University Extension Office. She will spend half her time in Phillips County and the other half in Sedgwick County. Commissioners noted a laptop computer was purchased for her for around $1,000 from Computers Etc.

Other business

 In other business in the month of June, commissioners:

 —signed a resolution to put on the ballot the issue of removing term limits for the District Attorney. County commissioners from all seven counties in the 13th Judicial District have supported the issue, which will need to be passed by a majority vote in the district.

 —met with Denise Selters, a representative from the Division of Housing, to see what can be done for low income people in the county.

 —approved the request from the County Clerk to have a mail-in ballot for the August primary election.
