|Bean harvest is almost finished|

Weather has permitted area bean farmers to get their crops out of the fields and to the elevator in recent weeks.
Darrel Krieg of Grainland Coop said Monday, Sept. 20, weather permitting, harvest would wrap up very soon.
Krieg noted the quality of the 2010 crop was pretty good, and yields were right around average and could’ve been higher had it not been for warmer weather when the beans were blooming.
“Overall everyone is happy with harvest,” Krieg said.
Krieg noted the price of beans has been down due to the big influence of the bean market in North Dakota. When they see a good year, the prices are affected in other places including Holyoke.
Jerry Haynes of Jack’s Bean Co. LLC in Holyoke also reported the quality of the beans as good but yields were down a little bit.
Haynes said it has been a quick and short bean harvest. With the weather cooperating for farmers, harvest has gone rather smoothly, he noted.
Haynes said some of the later beans have had better yields and expects the same for the little left to harvest. He estimates harvest is around 95 percent complete in the area.
