HHS wrestlers opened the season with an eighth-place finish at the Middle Park Invitational in Granby Saturday, Dec. 4.
With only five wrestlers in the competition, coach Jack Garrison was well-pleased with the Dragon effort at the 21-team tournament.
Broc Pelle led the HHS scoring, pinning his way to a championship at 171 pounds.
Mark Edmonds at 125 pounds and Skyler Dittmer at 140 both made it to the championship round, finishing with runner-up honors.
Parker Redfern rounded out the Dragon scoring with a third place at 160 pounds, and Ben Martinez competed at 145.
This Saturday, Dec. 11, the Dragons will host the Larry Stroh Memorial Tournament, with action beginning at 9 a.m.
Format for the local tourney has been changed this year. Coach Garrison explained it will be a dual meet tourney, giving wrestlers more mat time at this point in the season.
Garrison hopes to have nine HHS wrestlers on board for the tourney and hopes to have nine competing teams.
Individual results from the Dec. 4 Middle Park Invite follow:
125 lbs.—Mark Edmonds placed second. He pinned Addison Trower of Clear Creek in :47, pinned Casey Crescentini of Erie in 4:32, won a 4-1 decision over Chris Buccieri of Cherokee Trails and lost a 0-5 decision to Timothy Urenda of Pueblo South in the finals.
Edmonds wrestled very well in a weight class that was loaded, said coach Garrison. His only loss was to a 4A state champ from Pueblo South.
140 lbs.—Skyler Dittmer placed second. He suffered a disappointing one-point 10-11 loss to Clay Bunker of Erie in the final seconds of the championship match.
Prior to that, he had three wins by pins, sticking Kyle Staple of Pueblo South in 1:56, Kyle Dennis of Platte Canyon in 2:47 and Corson Kerbs of Saratoga in 1:45.
145 lbs.—Ben Martinez wrestled hard and did some good things as he continues to improve, said Garrison. Martinez was pinned in 4:47 by T.J. Campbell of Platte Canyon and was pinned in 1:43 by Nate Mack of Steamboat Springs.
160 lbs.—Parker Redfern placed third and looked very good after taking last year off from wrestling, noted the coach.
Redfern won a 19-3 tech fall over Brandon Heacox of Platte Canyon, pinned Austin McKittrick of The Academy in 3:36, was pinned by Matthew Kottenstette of Eagle Valley in 1:16 in the semis and pinned Richard Gonzales of Sorocco in 5:52.
171 lbs.—Broc Pelle placed first, showing strength and aggression as he came back after taking last year off from wrestling.
Pelle pinned his way through the tournament in three first-period, quick pins. He stuck Dylan Dreher of Northridge in 1:28, Cody Constine of Sorocco in :37 and Ryan Domson of Hayden in :45.
