Two HHS Dragon losses to 2009 state champs PDF Print E-mail

    Holyoke’s boys’ basketball team finished a fantastic 25-2 season, with the only two losses being to 1A State Champ Caliche and 2A State Champ Colorado Springs School in the state championship ball game.
    The Dragons lost a 55-50 game to Caliche on Feb. 12 and suffered a 42-39 loss to CS School March 14.

State tourney recapped
    In 2A boys’ competition at CSU Pueblo Massari Fieldhouse, first-round games resulted in wins for Holyoke, Ignacio, CS School and Meeker.
    Holyoke topped Sargent 44-35, Ignacio edged Heritage Christian 55-54, CS School defeated Lutheran Parker 50-41 and Meeker defeated Sanford 47-43.
    Semifinal action found Holyoke over Ignacio 45-33 and CS School over Meeker 66-41.
    CS School won the championship over Holyoke 42-39 and Meeker took third with a 56-43 win over Ignacio.
    In consolations, Heritage Christian ousted Sargent 58-51 and Sanford booted Lutheran Parker 63-53. Heritage Christian earned the consolation championship with a 60-55 overtime win over Sanford.

Wray girls take state
    For the second straight year, the Wray girls won a state championship, defeating Paonia 46-35 in the finals.
    WHS senior Stacy Post was named MVP by the Denver Post. Senior Christa Loyd and junior Brianna Bard were also named to the Post’s all-tournament team.
    Wray defeated Akron 77-48 to open the 2A girls’ tourney and Merino was defeated by Paonia 53-50. In other first-round games, Meeker topped Burlington 54-50 and Hayden defeated Sanford 41-30.
    Wray squeaked by Meeker 52-49 in the semis and Paonia defeated Hayden 48-33. Hayden edged Meeker 42-40 for third place.
    In consolations, Burlington defeated Akron 56-44 and Merino topped Sanford 51-40. Burlington won the consolation championship by defeating Merino 68-56.
