Thirty-five Holyoke Dragons are preparing for the opening football game of the 2011 season which is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 2 against Hayden. The game will be played in Denver at Valor Christian High School at 5 p.m.
The junior varsity team will play from 5-6 p.m. The varsity will warm up from 6-7 p.m. with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. For directions to Valor Christian High School click here.
First-year head coach Kyle Bules said the team is looking forward to the new season. The coach said the players are enthusiastic and have been working hard in practice the last few weeks.
Leading the charge this year will be 13 returning letterwinners. They include seniors Reid Baumgartner, Austin Killin, Broc Pelle and Parker Redfern; juniors Brett Cumming, Jesus Hermosillo, Ben Martinez, Chris Pell and Astolfo Rojo; and sophomores Trevor Dalton, Ryan Krogmeier, Alan Madrid and Logan Tharp.
Bules said practice so far this year has gone well. He said everyone has been real cohesive and doing what they are being asked to do.
The past two years’ rosters have been full of underclassmen. Many of the juniors and seniors on this year’s squad have seen considerable playing time since they were freshmen and have experienced the faster paced varsity games. This is something coaches hope will give the team a spark this year.
Five seniors and 10 juniors are accompanied by seven sophomores and 13 freshmen.
