Susan Ortner, who has served as a teacher/counselor in the Holyoke School District since 1984, will replace Dave Rice as high school principal for the 2007-08 school year. The School Board has also decided to eliminate the assistant JR/SR high principal position.
John Ayoub is interim administrator at Melissa Memorial Hospital as Arlene Harms steps out of her position for a six-month leave to care for her mother.
Criquet Cole offers computer services and instruction in her new business venture.

Opportunities for Holyoke students to learn science, agriculture, ecology and water management in a state-of-the-art outdoor science center and laboratory building are included in a proposal heard March 5 by Holyoke’s Board of Education.
This year’s Scholastic Book Fair will be highlighted with an appearance by award-winning children’s author John Gravdahl.
Haxtun Police Chief Rob Urbach has announced his bid for Phillips County Sheriff. The Sheriff’s position will be vacated by Urbach’s brother-in-law Scott McBee next January.

Doug and Pat Kamery of Holyoke have purchased The V&B Steakhouse from Vern and Barb Harding. Kountry Krock will be the new name of the business.
The Holyoke Centennial Commission has announced a special quilt promotion for the upcoming Centennial in Holyoke. Centennial quilt blocks will be designed by local citizens, and the quilt will be raffled or auctioned later in the year.
Forty Years Ago
Indian summer seems to have a tight hold on Phillips County. With the warm weather staying in the area for the most part of the past three weeks, the lack of moisture has become a serious problem.
Captain Robert E. Russell graduated from jet pilot training school on Feb. 26.
Fifty Years Ago
Rex C. Evans of Holyoke has been appointed clerk of the district court here, succeeding George A. Barker, who served in that office more than 29 years.
An old-fashioned box and pie supper will be held at the McKelvey schoolhouse southwest of Holyoke on March 23. The supper will be sponsored by the Wages Epworth Grange.
Mrs. A.K. Goodman of Canyon, Texas, the former Martha Brandt of this community, has been honored by selection as Teacher of the Year for the entire state of Texas.
