Height and speed an advantage for 2012-13 girls' basketball team PDF Print E-mail

Twenty-four HHS student athletes have hit the gym hard this month and are looking forward to a very competitive year on the girls’ basketball court.

“Our team has a good mixture of height and speed,” said head coach Arlan Scholl. “Playing in a league that is always competitive at the state level—and this year includes Akron, the reigning state champions in 2A—presents our team with a great challenge.”

Joining Scholl on the coaching staff are two new assistant coaches, Kia Kassman and Dave Rice. “These are excellent, experienced coaches and are a large asset to our Lady Dragon basketball program,” said Scholl.

The team is working hard and has set some goals to reach this season.

Returning letterwinners are seniors Chandler Gerk and Erin Vieselmeyer, juniors Maddie King and Audi Peña and sophomore Megan Vieselmeyer.

Joining them on the 2012-13 team are seniors Becca Weaver and Gabriela Chavez; juniors Tia Huffman, Zuri Lopez, Eva Penzing, Jacinda Krueger and Elli Ahro; sophomores Stefani Razo, Ana Olivas, Rosa Ochoa and Kaylee Ham; and freshmen Peyton Dittmer, Adi Bencomo, Monica Montes, Roni Beavers, Megan Parker, Jaylene Dominguez, Savanna Krueger and Josilyn Lutze.

Student managers this year are Rachel Schneider and Ivette Varela.

“We look forward to getting on the court, and it is always exciting to see our great Holyoke fans supporting our teams,” said Scholl.

The season kicks off with a Phillips County showdown against Haxtun on the Dragons’ home court this Friday, Nov. 30. Games are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Also on next week’s schedule is a C team girls’ game with Chase County at home Monday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m.

This year’s district basketball tournament is scheduled for Feb. 26, 28 and March 2, followed by regionals March 8-9. The season wraps up with the state tournament in Pueblo March 14-16.
