Written by Brenda Johnson Brandt

Dragon wrestlers gave their fans a show Thursday, Dec. 13 under the new spotlight when the grapplers defeated Yuma 48-28.

The Dragon Den Dual drew a nice crowd in the student appreciation night where students were admitted at no charge.

Nine varsity matches were wrestled, with Holyoke winning six and Yuma taking three. The visiting Indians had three open weight classes, while HHS had two open classes.

Starting at 170 lbs., the dual featured the heavier weights first, then went back to cover classes 106 through 160.

“The kids did a fantastic job, all the way through the line-up,” praised coach Jack Garrison.

He said the team is in good shape. “We ran them out of gas in several weights.” But he noted the whole team needs more offense and there’s lots of work to do.

Several varsity wrestlers head to the UNC Christmas Open tourney in Greeley this weekend, Dec. 21-22, then break for the holidays. Coach Garrison said Monday he’s still trying to find a JV tournament for other team members this weekend.

In the Yuma dual last week, Spencer Kotch, Jesus Hermosillo, Dylan Kotch and Ben Martinez earned six team points apiece, winning their matches with pins.

Luke Stewart and Nicholas Ortner won their matches by decisions to gain three team points apiece.

Eric Rojo, Morgan Golden and Marques Harvey had no Yuma opponents, so were declared winners and added six team points apiece.
