|Written by Holyoke Enterprise|
All students and staff from the elementary, junior and senior high schools in Holyoke will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day Wednesday, Oct. 9.
Approximately 600 students from Holyoke School District will be walking Wednesday along with parents, teachers and community leaders.
The event will begin at 3 p.m. with kids, parents and community leaders walking from the front of each school, continuing on around the athletic fields on the sidewalks. Other special activities associated with the walk include taking a final lap around the brand new all-weather track, while enjoying a cool treat. City and county leaders will be on hand to give a proclamation.
Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.
