Heading into the 2014 season, the Holyoke baseball team will have many key positions to fill as they try to match last year’s success.
Coming off of a 20-4 record last season that ended in the regional finals to Lutheran, coach John Zilla said that inexperience could be the biggest obstacle for the Dragons this year. With six starters from last year gone due to graduation, those who have played at the varsity level will be looked to lead the team throughout the season.
“We lost some great seniors last year,” Zilla said. “Hopefully seniors this year will step up and take charge and we’ll have a good year.”
Practice began for the Dragons Monday, Feb. 24 with 24 kids filling the roster. For basketball players, Monday, March 17 marked the official first day of practice. With the basketball season stretching deep into the post season, many baseball players will have just a week to prepare for the upcoming season.
