Gene Wells - December 10, 2009

Word was received this week of the death of former Holyoke resident Gene Wells, 82, of League, City, Texas. He died in Houston, Texas Dec. 10, 2009.

Services were held Dec. 14 in Houston, with a memorial service to be planned in Holyoke at a later date.

Gene was an 18-year-old freshman at the University of Colorado in Boulder when his father, Dale Wells, was killed in a car accident. Gene returned to Wray, where he assumed management of Dale Wells Ford Garage with his uncle, Clair Muller.

After the family sold the business five years later, Gene purchased Gleason Motors, a Dodge/Plymouth dealership at Holyoke, and soon added the Chrysler franchise.

He built a strong small buisness of sales and service of Chrysler products, and in 1982, Gene Wells Motors was honored with Chrysler Corps.’ Award of Excellence.

Gene and his wife Joan celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past August, having been married in 1949.

They retired in the late 1980s to Sun Lakes, Ariz., and several years ago moved to League City, Texas, to be near their daughter Sherri and her husband, Gary Romer.

Gene was preceded in death by two sons, Alan Dale in a car accident in 1976 and Barry (who was associated with Gene in the car business), to a heart attack in 2000.

Survivors include his wife Joan and his daughter Sherri of League City, Texas; grandson Don of Las Cruces, N.M.; granddaughters Nikki and Jenny of Houston, Texas, Pam of Littleton and Toni of Korea; nine great-grandchildren; sister Norma Wagner of Sterling; and brothers Armor of Port Townsend, Wash., Dale “Bud” of Greeley and Kent of Sun City, Ariz.
