Roy From - September 27, 2010
Roy Arthur From, 68, was born in Holyoke Feb. 8, 1942 to Merle and Marjorie From. He died Sept. 27, 2010 in Bloomington, Ind.
Chief Warrant Officer 3 From, a retired Navy veteran of the Vietnam Campaign, was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Roy From was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. He enjoyed membership in the Lions Clubs, VFW and Greene County Landmarks Foundation.
Roy From grew up on a Colorado wheat farm and attended Colorado State University prior to serving honorably in the U.S. Navy for 20 years. During his career, he served eight years at sea aboard the USS Nimitz and USS Eisenhower. He was a plank owner of the USS Nimitz and was the 1971 U.S. Navy West Coast Judo Champion.
He loved his family, church, aviation, farming, the U.S. Navy, reading U.S. history, repairing Sunbeam Alpine sports cars and, most of all, being “Papa” to his grandchildren. He will be sorely missed.
Surviving him are his wife, Doris Shattuck; brother, Jerry and wife Toby of Amherst; sister, Kay of Dinosaur; sons and their families, James and Rebecca of Lake Ridge, Va., Patrick and Jennifer of New Paltz, N.Y., Roy and LuAnne Allen of Bloomfield, Ind. and Andrew and Jill of Lafayette, La.; grandchildren, Megan, Austin, Travis, Mitchell, Mallory, Benjamin, Sarah Katherine, Abigail and Margot; and several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
The funeral service was held Sept. 30 at First Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield. CWO3 Roy From will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
