Jack Geist - December 14, 2010
John Le-Roy “Jack” Geist, 89, of Holyoke was born Nov. 17, 1921 in Fort Collins to John and Elizabeth Geist. He died and entered into eternal rest Dec. 14, 2010.
Jack grew up and attended school in Fort Collins and Wellington, graduating from Waverly High School in 1939. On Dec. 9, 1941, he married Irene Helen Peppler in Fort Collins. To this union, two children were born: Janet Kay and Jack LeRoy.
He was in the Army Air Corps for five years and four months, receiving an honorable discharge in November 1945. From December 1945 until October 1950, Jack owned and operated a combination café and ice cream parlor in Denver.
In November 1950, he accepted a position with longtime friend Dale Reimer at Reimer-Smith Grain Co. in Holyoke, later becoming a part owner and assistant manager. Jack retired in June 1985.
He and Irene enjoyed spending winters at their home in Arizona for a number of years. They enjoyed building and moving into their new home in 1995, in which Jack spent the remainder of his life.
Jack was an active member of the Holyoke community. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Holyoke for over 50 years. Organizations of which he was a member and served in various capacities include: Commander, American Legion Post #90 in 1957; Master, Holyoke Lodge #81, AF&AM in 1963; president, Holyoke Bowling Association; served two terms on Holyoke Town Board, 1968-1972; appointed by Governor Love in 1972 to the 13th District Judicial Commission; a 16-year member of Holyoke Lions Club; and a member of Sterling Elks Lodge for 51 years.
Being an avid golfer, Jack was on the Holyoke Golf Club Board of Directors from 1962-1963, during which time the course was undergoing the transition from sand greens to grass. His love of the game kept him active until his death. Even though he lost his sight a number of years ago, he rarely missed the opportunity to go to the golf course on Men’s Day with his many friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his spouse, Irene; brother, Calvin Geist; and sisters, Elda Waag and Miriam Crossland.
Jack is survived by his daughter, Janet Patton and husband James of Fort Collins; son, Jack L. Geist and wife Jacqueline (Barth) of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren, Anthony John Geist, Garret Allen Geist and wife Kristin and Kimberley Marie Geist of Omaha, and A.J. Patton and wife Stephanie of Fort Collins; great-grandchildren, Bailey Spencer Geist-Murdock, Connor John Geist-Murdock, Gabrielle Ilana Geist and Mallory Maxine Geist of Omaha, and Jack Andrew Patton and Claire Marie Patton of Fort Collins; along with many nieces and nephews. Other survivors include special friends Carol Koontz and Paula Strode.
Memorial service was held Dec. 17 at First United Methodist Church of Holyoke with Pastor Paul Sung and Pastor Gary Rahe officiating. Cremation was chosen, and inurnment followed in Holyoke Cemetery.
