Frieda Peterson - December 31, 2010

Frieda Madeline (Kercher) Peterson was born Oct. 31, 1921, the fifth child of Jacob and Clara Kercher in Reliance, S.D. She died Dec. 31, 2010 at Carriage House Assisted Living in Holyoke.

Frieda attended school at Marmarth, N.D. and graduated as valedictorian at the age of 16.

July 1940, Frieda married Merril Peterson in Bowman, N.D. To this union four children were born: Gerald (Gary), Leland (Bud), Ardis (Ardie) and Donald (Don). Frieda kept herself busy with four children ages 4 and under.

The family lived in Bridgeport, Neb., owning a small sweet shop called the Sugar Bowl. Shortly after buying this business they purchased a café and bowling alley, Rainbow Café and Rainbow Lanes.

In 1954, the family moved to Sterling where Merril did machinery repair and they purchased the Pla Mor bowling alley. In 1959, the family again moved, this time to Holyoke. Merril opened his own machine shop and the couple purchased the Rainbow Café and added on the dining room.

In 1965, after selling the café, Frieda went back to school— beauty school. She attended McCook School of Beauty in McCook, Neb. After graduation, she then went to work for her daughter at Ardie’s Beauty Barr located on Interocean Avenue in Holyoke. Later, in 1976, Frieda also helped make the move to the present beauty shop and worked until her retirement 20 years later.

Both Merril and Frieda were baptized into the Lutheran Church in the early 1950s. Frieda had two loves: her family and fishing. She spent a lot of time fishing with Merril and also with her sister at the lake in Ogallala.

Preceding Frieda in death were her parents; husband, Merril; sisters, Irene, Rose and Lucille; brothers, Leland and Earl; and son, Gary.

Surviving her are her brother, John; son, Bud of Lexington, Neb.; daughter, Ardie and husband Fred of Holyoke; son, Don of Evans; seven grandchildren and three step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

There will be no visitation, as cremation was chosen.

The memorial service will be held Monday, Jan. 10 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Holyoke, with Pastor Gary Rahe officiating. Inurnment will follow at Holyoke Memorial Park.
