Dean Hughes - March 01, 2009

Dean Converse Hughes, age 92, of Holyoke, died Sunday, March 1, 2009 in Holyoke.
Dean’s parents Frank and Bessie Hughes moved by covered wagon from Missouri in 1912 to a farm south of Lamar, Neb. Dean was born on the farm on May 26, 1916. In 1924 the family moved to a farm 17 miles southeast of Holyoke. Dean always referred to this place as the “Home Place.” The family lived there for five years and then moved back to Kansas to Haddam where Dean completed the sixth, seventh and eighth grades of school.
In 1934 Dean married Marie Simmons in Hermitage, Mo. and they moved back to the home place southeast of Holyoke where their first son Bob was born at home on Oct. 14, 1935. On Jan. 2, 1940, another son Jim was born. In 1963, Dean settled into a house in Holyoke. In 2005 he moved into the Carriage House where he resided until his death.
Preceding him in death are his parents, son Jim and sister Hazel.
Surviving him are his son Bob and wife Rochelle of Houston, Texas; Bob’s mother Ada Marie of Branson, Mo.; three grandchildren, Scott Hughes of Phoenix, Ariz., Becky Elwood and husband Gary of Powell, Wyo. and Shelley Naylor and husband Eric of Phoenix, Ariz.; three great-grandchildren; and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
Graveside service was Thursday, March 5 at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in rural Holyoke, followed by inurnment.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Carriage House, 816 S. Interocean, Holyoke, CO 80734. Gerk Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
