Rita From - March 21, 2012
Rita From was born May 24, 1920 in Harrison, Neb. She was the second of three children born to John and Bessie Mae (Stroud) Borky. She died March 21, 2012.
Rita grew up in the Harrison and Ardmore, S.D. area and graduated from Harrison High School in 1939. Rita met Clarence From in Harrison when he was traveling and operating a portable skating rink around the country. Clarence and Rita eloped and were married in Ainsworth, Neb. on June 28, 1940.
Clarence and his brother Merle bought land west of Venango, Neb. where they made their homes and began their farming careers. Clarence continued to operate the skating rink around the country after they had moved to Venango.
Clarence was killed in a train-vehicle accident west of Venango in July of 1995. Rita continued to maintain her farm home until late November of 2010 when she broke her hip and moved to Regent Park Nursing Home in Holyoke. She had been failing in health and died at Regent Park the morning of March 21, 2012. She had reached the age of 91.
Rita was always a strong-willed woman but easy-going with a good sense of humor. She enjoyed the life of a farm wife and always had a beautiful flower garden. She loved animals and always took care of her cats and her dogs named “Babe.” She had been a longtime member of the Venango Community Church and supported the Perkins County Animal Shelter in Grant, Neb.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Joan Ahlgren, who died in 2002; brother, John Borky; and sister, Elaine Ellicott.
She is survived by one daughter, Diane Filing and husband Phil of Glenrock, Wyo.; one son, Ed From and wife Kimber of Otis; three grandchildren, Glenn Ahlgren of Trousdale, Calif., Beth Lindsay of Colorado Springs and Rylee From of Otis; two great-granddaughters, Claire and Kate Lindsay; and other relatives and friends.
Graveside services were held March 23 at the Venango Cemetery with Pastor Chris Costrini and John Long officiating.
A memorial has been established to the Venango Community Church and the Perkins County Animal Shelter.
Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant was in charge of arrangements.
