Burdette McAdam - August 25, 2012
Burdette Junior McAdam, 90, of Ovid, died Aug. 25, 2012 in Julesburg. Burial of cremains will be at a later date. Burdette was born Feb. 3, 1922 in Julesburg to Cloyd and Mabel (Grimm) McAdam.
They made their home in rural Venango, Neb., where he attended grade school at Fairy Dell Country School and graduated from Venango High in 1940. Burdette enlisted in the Merchant Marines in December 1944 and was discharged in August 1945 at the end of hostilities of WWII.
After his discharge, he returned to Venango where he met and later married Betty Jean Lefler on June 1, 1948. He worked various jobs including farming and owning and operating McAdam Recreation in Venango for 18 years. His biggest and most important job was helping his wife Betty raise six children.
They moved to Ovid after retiring from farming, where he was active with the Senior Citizens Center. He was a retired member of the Fairy Dell Fire Department Board, member of American Legion Post #270 of Venango and Ogallala Elks Lodge #1760.
Burdette was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; parents, Cloyd and Mabel McAdam; sister, Betty Ann McAdam; brother, Carroll (Dwain) McAdam; and brother-in-law, Robert Biesemeier.
Burdette is survived by his six children, son Gary McAdam of Sidney, Neb., daughter Karen Carruthers and husband Perry of Holyoke, daughter Roxanne Hiatt and husband Harlan of Lincoln, Neb., daughter Sherylynn Brown and husband Richard of Amherst, son Steven McAdam of Venango and son James McAdam and wife Jonna of Julesburg; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Beverly Biesemeier of Denver, Arliene Hull and husband Robert of Denver and Darlene Gaileu and husband Hoover of Ogallala, Neb.; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and relatives.
Memorials can be made in Burdette’s name to the Ovid Senior Center or American Legion Post #270 of Venango.
Austin-Tennant Funeral Home of Julesburg is in charge of arrangements.
