Grant Salyers - June 01, 2009
Grant Salyers, age 79, of Holyoke, died Monday, June 1, 2009 in Sterling. Grant was born to Jason and Carrie (Dean) Salyers Sept. 5, 1929 in Kenova, W. Va.
He joined the United States Army and served during World War II where he was stationed in Germany.
Throughout the years Grant resided in West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Nebraska, Minnesota, Colorado and Wisconsin. He held many different jobs during his lifetime, some of which were in a coal mine in West Virginia, a cook, bartender and in a car manufacturing plant. He worked at the TRW Plant in Ogallala, Neb., Haggard Drilling in Grant, Neb. and at Keith County Feedlot.
Once he settled in Colorado in 1979, jobs he held were for Keith Wade Construction, Hermit Haven Dairy Farms, Reimer-Smith Grain Elevator, he owned his own construction company with Harold Robbins, D&D Farms, Seaboard Foods and janitor for Holyoke High School. In his retirement years he worked as a handyman doing odd jobs and maintenance.
On May 27, 1963, he married Shirley Sue and to this union two children were born, James and Wanda. On Sept. 19, 1971 he married Dolly Huggins. For this union, Dolly brought three children, Bruce, Angela and Tammy that Grant raised and loved as his own. Later came three children of their own, Kellee, Billy and Christopher.
Grant was a member of the American Legion. Some of the things he enjoyed were fishing, hunting and camping. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents; brothers Don Dean and Albert Salyers; and sisters Faye Grahm, Billy Dove Skaggs and Huldah Runion.
Surviving him are his children James Salyers and his wife Dana of Reedley, Calif., Wanda Salyers of Sebille, Fla, Bruce Huggins and Angela Clements and her husband Jim, all of Longmont, Tammy Coelin of W. Salem, Wis., Kellee Salyers and Joe Renner of Holyoke, Billy Salyers of Manilla, Utah and Christopher Salyers and his wife Staci of Sterling; and sister Ruth Cohn of Wheelersburg, Ohio.
Grandchildren Aaron Salyers, Chelsie Saunders, Alexis Huggins, Stephen Huggins, Meagan Huggins, Brendon Roebuck, Bryce Roebuck, Dakota Clements, Donavon Coelin, Tara Coelin, Tristan Erickson, Amanda Renner, Harlee Renner, Jhordan Renner, Zander Salyers, Lily Salyers, Annika Salyers and Aeson Salyers; great-grandchildren Addyson Fielding and Amiyah Reed; many nieces, nephews, friends and his loyal pet “Little Bitt.”
There will be no visitation for Grant, however, his register book will be available to sign on Thursday, June 4, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Gerk Funeral Home in Holyoke.
Memorial service will be Friday, June 5 at 2 p.m. at Gerk Funeral Home in Holyoke.
