A train is pictured entering Holyoke from the east in 1918. Construction of the railroad started near Holyoke on March 15, 1887, and was completed to Sterling on Sept. 27, 1887. It was reported in August of that year that a small booming settlement had started at the temporary offices of the railroad 1 mile east of Holyoke itself, where there were from 150-200 cars, temporary side tracks, piles of ties and rails, a turntable and more. — Source: Phillips County Museum
